to elicit gains in student achievement. These activities are
described in two documents: 1) "Educational
Programs That Work," which is produced by U.S. Department
of Education's National Diffusion Network, and 2) "What
Works in the Middle: Results-Based Staff Development for the
Middle Grades," produced by the National Staff
Development Council. To indicate which activities can be found in
either of these documents, they are marked with the following
